Sports Sector Intervention

Nigeria has over 200 million people with 60% under 24 years, representing a critical demographic to engage productively through sports. Despite this youthful population advantage, Nigeria's sports industry lacks adequate funding, investment, and infrastructure. The sports sector is driven largely by government funding with insufficient private sector involvement. There is unequal distribution of sporting infrastructure such as recreational spots, training centers, and stadia across the country.
Sport is a powerful social force that can foster unity and economic development. Nigeria's youthful population represents enormous potential for sporting excellence and social cohesion, yet systemic underinvestment in grassroots infrastructure limits talent discovery, community engagement, and productive youth participation. The broader infrastructure gap in the country also significantly affects the sports industry.
Limited Funding & Investment
Nigeria's sports industry lacks adequate funding and investment. The sports sector is driven largely by government funding with insufficient private sector involvement. Limited budgetary allocation constrains development of grassroots sports infrastructure nationwide.
Infrastructure Deficit
Insufficient and unequal distribution of sporting infrastructure such as recreational spots, training centers, and stadia. Most facilities are concentrated in urban centers, leaving rural and peri-urban communities without access to quality sports infrastructure.
Weak Talent Development Systems
Absence of structured grassroots talent identification and development pathways. Limited coaching capacity, inadequate training facilities, and lack of systematic competitions prevent discovery and nurturing of sporting talent from community level.
Youth Engagement Gap
With 60% of Nigeria's population under 24 years, there is urgent need to productively engage youth through sports. Limited recreational opportunities and sporting infrastructure reduce community cohesion and health promotion opportunities.

Strategic Objectives & Pillars
GLWD Sports Development Company Limited aims to reposition Nigeria's sports sector through the development, operation, and management of greenfield sporting facilities via a sustainable, private-sector-led initiative. The strategy aims to productively engage the youthful population while fostering national unity. The strategy is anchored on three pillars:
01
Sustainable Financing
GLWD Sports Development Company Limited is resourced from GLWD Investment Company Limited, recognizing that the cost to operate and maintain the various proposed sporting facilities under Green Line White Dots Project would outweigh the revenue to be generated from operations. This is subsidized from the annual operating budget of GLWD Investment Company Limited.
02
Sporting Facilities Intervention
Develop, construct, operate and manage greenfield sports complex centers taking into account yearly budgetary allocation from GLWD Investment Company Limited. The roadmap plan is to establish at least one functional sports complex in each political ward, providing accessible sporting infrastructure for communities and schools nationwide.
03
Employment Creation
Create tens of thousands of direct and indirect jobs through significant recruitment and training of personnel and workers as well as other initiatives necessary to enhance service delivery. GLWD ensures good remuneration and working conditions for all sports personnel including coaches, facility managers, and support staff.
